Re: Mashara's Fanfics
Part one of my one shot for the Gruvia prize I should have gotten done back in November (oopsie XP), probably going to put it up in three parts on here... enjoy! and let me know if there is anything I should change before I publish the whole thing on FF.net
- Spoiler:
Gray sped down the path to the guild at a fast walk, trying hard not to make it look like he was running. He was already five minutes late for meeting the team to go on their latest job and he knew there would be no escaping a punishment from Erza now but he was not about to show up sweaty and breathing hard either. Gray had an image he had to uphold and being as cool and hard as the ice he created was a part of that image. Plus he couldn’t let the fire freak see he was worried about a punishment from Erza, Natsu would have broken land speed record to get to the guild on time and probably taken out half of the surrounding trees in the process. Finally he pushed through the front doors of the new guild hall, looking around for the rest of his team. Lucy, Natsu and Wendy were standing by the bar, Charle and Happy were a little ways off from them talking to Lily, Erza was nowhere to be seen. Gray sighed a breath of relief but he was also curious, it wasn’t like Erza to be late for her own meeting. Why was she so late and why were the Exceed Squad in attendance?
“Gray, you’re late,” Lucy complained as he joined them at the bar. “Good thing Erza isn’t here yet or we would never hear the end of it.”
“I’m sorry,” he replied sourly at her tone. “My alarm clock stopped working and I slept in. Where is Erza anyway? She isn’t usually late.”
“She got called away on urgent Guild business by Master Makarov,” Wendy replied in her usually cheery voice. “She sent Lily in her place, and somebody else.”
Gray’s eyebrows rose in surprise and he crossed his arms over a bare chest. “Who?”
“Well obviously we don’t know yet or they would be here already,” Natsu answered with a snicker.
Gray turned his scowled to him, “It was just a question flame brain, what about the mission?”
“The job is at the Magnolia Zoo,” Lucy explained quickly to avoid one of the famous Fairy Tail Guild Hall brawls. “Someone has been using magic on the animals and making them attack the visitors and while they create a diversion, the Mages are stealing valuables from the crowd in the confusion. The zoo keepers say they have lost over half their business the last two weeks because of this and they are desperate for it to be stopped before an animal seriously hurts someone and the zoo gets shut down permanently.”
“How do they want us to help?” Natsu asked curiously. “Do we get to fight the animals? I call the elephants!”
“No, Natsu,” Lucy replied with a frown. “I think they want us to stop them by finding out how they are controlling the animals and prevent them from doing it again, maybe we can even catch them in the act. Wendy, would be able to heal them if there is any permanent damage to their controlled minds?” She asked, turning the younger girl. Wendy shrugged, “I won’t know until I try, it depends how they are doing it.”
Gray nodded in agreement, “I wish whoever it was would show up already so we could head over there and get started.”
“Juvia is here,” he heard a voice call from behind him. Gray barely managed not to flinch and jump in surprise, it shouldn’t have affected him as much as it did since he was getting used to her popping up out of nowhere but it still did.
“Erza asked Juvia to accompany all of you on the mission in her place,” Juvia joined their circle with a big smile on her face. “Juvia is sorry she is late for the meeting and is holding everyone up.”
“That’s ok,” Gray replied quickly, still trying to stop his heart from beating out of his chest. “We were just getting the background information from Lucy and she will fill you in on the way, we should probably get going.”
“Good idea,” Natsu agreed happily turning towards the door. “I want to see some elephants! Come on Happy!” “Aye Sir!” The blue Exceed spread his wings and fluttered over Natsu’s right shoulder.
“Lily,” Wendy called as they walked out of the Guild Hall. “Where is Gajeel? I would have thought you would have been out on a job with him instead of coming to help us.”
“Well, Erza asked me to do her a favor and Gajeel is a little… indisposed right now so I wasn’t busy anyway,” the black Exceed replied in his low timbered voice, sounding strangely out of place when he was in his chibi form.
“Indisposed? What does that mean?” The girl asked curiously.
“Gajeel has a cold,” Lucy answered before Lily could explain. “I overheard you and Mira this morning when you told her he wouldn’t be able to work for a few days because he is sick. But don’t worry; I think she sent Levy over with some soup so that he gets better quickly.”
“Gajeel is going to kill me…” Lily mumbled looking at the ground.
“Common guys, we should focus. Lucy, tell Juvia what you just told the rest of us so that we can start making a plan,” Gray tried to get them back on track before everyone got too distracted from the task at hand. He wanted to finish this job as quickly and as painless as possible.
“Who put you in charge?” Natsu challenged, sounding annoyed. “Just because Erza isn’t here doesn’t mean you get to take over Gray.”
“I’m not trying to take over,” Gray replied, equally irritated. “I just think we need to have some direction, that’s all.”
“I have direction!” Natsu responded heatedly. “I know exactly where I am going! Umm… it’s this way to the zoo right?” He asked pointing to south. “Never mind! I can smell the elephants,” he sniffed the air and took off at a fast pace.
“Hey Natsu, wait for us!” Lucy called to him before turning to Juvia, “Ok, here is the story…” Lucy described the zoo’s problems again to Juvia as they followed along. Gray sighed and followed a few steps behind them, he had a feeling that it was going to be a long day.
***
When they got to Magnolia Zoo the large front gate was still locked and Natsu pounded on the wooden door until the head zookeeper finally let them in. Kendra was a small middle aged woman with light brown hair and kind blue eyes that filled with relief when they explained who they were and why they were there.
“Thank you so much for coming, I’m glad that our request was answered right away.” She led them through the front part of the zoo and into one of the buildings usually reserved for the staff. “So far only two animals have been affected, the tiger and one of the bears, both of them tried to break out of their enclosures but thankfully none of the guests got injured. After each incident a few people reported their wallets missing from their pockets but none of them remember quite when it could have happened, it’s like there is a ghost walking around and picking pockets…”
“What happened to the animals?” Lucy asked curiously. “Did they end up going back to normal?”
“It seemed to wear off after a couple of hours but we still have them in seclusion just in case there is a lasting effect we haven’t seen yet. Would you like to see them?”
“Yes please,” Wendy answered. “If they are sick I might be able to sense something with the Sky Dragon’s healing magic.” Kendra led them further into the building until they came to a hallway with heavy metal doors. “The bear is in here and the tiger across the hall,” she pointed to one of the first doors on the left. “Which would you like to see?”
“Which one was first? I want to see that one.”
“The bear, follow me.” Kendra took a large key ring off her belt and started to search for the right key. “When we get in there stay as far back as you can from the cage, just in case.” Most of the room was a large cage with a brown colored bear napping on some hay inside. It raised one droopy eye at them as they entered but seemed uninterested and rolled over to go back to sleep. Wendy raised her hands through the bars and concentrated on the bear. “I don’t usually stand this far away, but it still might work from here.”
“Just be careful Wendy,” Gray warned, eyeing the sleeping bear. Wendy shook her head and lowered her hands, “I can’t feel anything from here, I don’t think whatever happened to him is going to affect him anymore though.” They left the bear and went to the tiger, but once again Wendy felt nothing.
“Whatever magic it is, it seems that it completely wears off after a while,” Wendy told Kendra was they went back into the main part of the zoo.
“That is great news!” The zookeeper exclaimed with a smile. “But it would be even better if we didn’t have any other animals get effected in the first place.”
“Leave it to us! We will found out what is behind this in no time… now where are the elephants?” Natsu took off to find the elephant enclosure, Lucy following to keep him from getting into too much trouble.
“Well, maybe we should all split up?” Wendy asked turning to remaining members of the team.
“That might be a good idea,” Gray agreed. “How different exhibits are there, Kendra?”
“Well the main animals are out in the big enclosures where the elephants are, but the monkey house, reptile room, aquarium are all in different buildings. So far there haven’t been any problems in any area except the main enclosures…”
“That makes it more likely that one of the buildings will be targeted next. Lucy and Natsu will hang around the main area so we should split up and take the buildings…” Gray continued to take charge now that Natsu wasn’t around to challenge him.
“Wendy and I will go to the monkeys,” Charle volunteered and Lily nodded in agreement. “Happy and I will go to the reptile room,” he added. “Reptile room?” Happy repeated with a slight quaver in his voice, “Are there big snakes?”
“Don’t worry, they are all in cages,” Kendra answered with a smile.
“Juvia and Gray will go to the aquarium,” Juvia grabbed Gray’s arm and started steering him towards the big domed building.
“Hey wait,” Gray tried to resist slightly but knew that he would never escape Juvia’s grip now. “We should make a better plan.”
“The zoo is opening in about ten minutes,” Kendra called after them. “If you see anything suspicious please let me know.”
Gray sighed and resigned himself to be dragged toward the aquarium. An afternoon of looking at fish might not be that bad and with any luck they would solve this mystery quickly before Juvia turned too clingy or embarrassing.

Re: Mashara's Fanfics
Here you go Luna
- Spoiler:
- The sun beat down, making the prairie air so hot and heavy it was almost hard to breathe unless you could find a spot in the sparse shade. The only living thing that seemed to be brave or stupid enough to be in its direct path was a blonde headed youth, cursing under his breath as he tried breaking up the dry and hard soil.
“Give it up Iker,” a thin and soft voice called from a darkened archway that lead from a large stone building to the dying attempt of a garden. “With the drought going on you couldn’t even grow a cactus in there.” The boys frown deepened into more of a grimace but he didn’t stop or turn around to face the much older man.
“I can make it work Master, I just have to haul more water from the well and get rid of the weeds… If we can make the temple self-sustaining we wouldn’t have to depend on the food deliveries as much.”
The man sighed from the dark, “Boy, I can count on one hand the number of years that good for nothing patch of soil yielded anything work eating, it’s just too dry and arid here for a proper garden. You don’t even have a hat on and you are still wearing those ridiculous robes, all you are going to accomplish is dying of the heat and giving me the chore of dragging your dead body back in anyway.” Finally Iker stilled his hoe, leaning on it for a moment while thinking.
“Fine,” he replied, “But I shall figure out a way to make things grow here.” He turned and headed towards the archway with his head down, dragging the hoe behind him.
“Fine, fine,” His Master replied allowing him to walk past. “If you think you can accomplish something in six months that another could not in over 60 years, then be my guest. Just wear a hat next time.” Iker leaned the hoe against the wall beside some other tools he had collected from storage the last few weeks. Then he turned to head to his room, the Master was right about his robes being too hot and now that he was in the cool air of the stone temple he could feel the sticky sweat on his back and head. He had greatly disapproved of the thin cotton shirt and loose pants the Master usually wore, he had only put the robes of his office twice since Iker had been at the temple. Now that it was approaching the hottest part of summer he could better understand the Master’s position, the heavy wool robes didn’t make any sense in the prairie’s hot climate. Not that Iker would ever admit that though, he stubbornly wore the correct clothes because those were the rules and he liked to follow the rules. Unlike most boys that attended the seminary for school he hadn’t chosen his path when he hit puberty, Iker was an orphan, raised by the priests since he was a baby and his path had always been known. The rules weren’t just something he had to follow, they were a part of his life, his world, and the part he was to play. Entering his small room he started to strip off his wet robes in annoyance, the failed garden was just one of his many miseries since coming to this place. As he splashed some water on his chest and arms to cool off he thought back to that moment nearly six months ago when he found out that he would be coming to this place. The Dragon’s Temple had always had appeal to him, he spent a lot of his free time at the seminary reading about the mythical creatures and their legends. The temple itself had become kind of a joke among the younger priests, remote and run by a rumored to be crazy man who had managed to drive off all his apprentices for over the last 30 years. Still, when Iker had expressed his desire to do his apprenticeship there it hadn’t taken much convincing from his teachers for them to agree. Now he thought they were probably laughing at him, waiting for him to come back and admit that he couldn’t cut it out here but he wouldn’t let them have the last laugh. The Master was stubborn but so was he; he could ride it out and makes things go his way as long as he stayed strong. Iker went to his small wardrobe and took out another set of robes from within, pulling them on a little bit more forceful than necessary he steeled himself to prepare for what the rest of the day would bring.
Iker made his way down the stone hallway as quietly as possible, with any luck the Master would not hear him and he could make it to the library undetected. Finally Iker was in front of the large wooden door that led to the library, the place where he had spent most of his time since coming to the temple. He pushed open the door and crept inside, relieved when he noticed that the Master didn’t seem to be there. In the farthest corner of the room was a small desk covered in books, rolled up scrolls and pieces of scrap paper, all of Iker’s research since coming to the temple. Learning about the dragons had been his main objective and the Dragon Temple had way more to offer on the subject then the main library at the seminary. Iker had gotten busy organizing and in some cases repairing the hundreds of books that covered the room, losing himself for hours in their pages. Just as he was about to sit down and begin the large door reopened slowly and the Master poked his gray and nearly bald head into the room.
“Ah, Iker, there you went,” He turned his blue eyed gaze to the young man in his corner.
“Yes, Master?” Iker tried to keep the aggravation out of his voice and he felt his precious hours of research slipping away.
“I want to show you something, come with me.” The Master turned around without waiting for a reply and Iker leapt from his seat to follow. As annoyed as he was at being interrupted he was also intrigued by whatever it was that the Master wanted to show him. Actually lessons had been few and far between since Iker’s arrival, and even then it was mostly half hearted attempts at explaining the importance of some relic or legend he had thought might be of interest. His curiosity grew when the Master started leading him toward the kitchen, one of the only rooms in the small temple that had seen regular use before Iker had gotten there. If he is just taking me there to show him the proper way to make a sandwich I might lose my mind, Iker thought to himself darkly. The Master walked through the kitchen toward the back of the room where the cold storage area was. “Now remember, what I am about to show you must always be kept a secret,” the Master spoke in his quiet lecture voice, like he was tutoring a child. “Why?” Iker asked him, it sounded moody even to his own ears. “Because what I am about to show you is the real secret of the Dragon Temple, the real reason why all of this is out in the middle of nowhere.” The Master came to the backmost wall of the room and lifted up tattered piece of sack that had been covering the floor. Iker noticed that the stones under the sack where different than the others covering the floor, their edges where more sunken and defined.
“Help me lift these,” the Master ordered as he knelt on the ground. “I’m not as young as I was when I last came down here.” Iker went across from him and reached around the stone in the floor, surprised that there seemed to be finger holds carved into the rock.
“When was that?” he asked curiously as he tried to keep his grip and pull the stone out of place.
“Last month,” the Master replied simply and Iker was so startled that he nearly let his fingers slip. Together they managed to pull the rock out of place and then the next rock beside it. Iker then noticed that the rocks were hiding an opening into the floor, stone steps were just visible in the dark covering the tunnel. “That is big enough,” the Master told Iker as he sat down on the floor. “Now follow me down and bring the light there.” Iker noticed for the first time that a candle was lit and waiting next to the opening. “Watch your steps though,” the Master’s voice came from down the tunnel, “These stairs are very old, the last thing we need is for you to take a tumble down and break one of your scrawny legs.” “My legs are not scrawny!” Iker retorted before he could stop himself. Then he was glad that the Master was already in the tunnel so that he could not see the blush coming over his cheeks. He heard a soft laugh as a reply and grabbed at the candle angrily, crawling to the opening he felt for the first step with his foot and eased himself down. He was almost on the last step when the hem of his robe got caught in his foot, he tried to kick it out and nearly tripped on his own feet in the process. A strong hand steadied him and felt the Master take the candle out of his hand. “I told you those robes were nothing but a nuisance, now give me this before you drop it and we end up in the dark.” Iker’s ire started to rise again but it was forgotten once the Master lit a small torch using the candle. The light flickered off the stone walls of the tunnel, but it was not that that caught Iker’s eye. Hundreds, if not thousands of images where carved into the walls, Iker walked to one and ran his fingers over it slowly. The smooth edges told him that they had been carved a long, long time ago and on closer inspection all the shapes where pictures of dragons. Some were flying with their wings stretched out, others were crouching with their heads held high, large dragons, small dragons, fat dragons, skinny ones. Iker tried to take them all in at once, look at every image and memorize every line. “Now, now, we don’t have time for that,” came the Master’s voice from behind him. “Come along boy, if you want to admire the art you can do it some other time.” Iker managed to tear himself away from the wall and turned to follow the master down the tunnel. The steps they had taken down from the cold storage room had not been that long, but Iker could feel the tunnel slope underneath his feet, yet the walls seemed to stay the same height. After about a hundred yards or so of carved tunnel they came to a large opening at the end, Iker did not know what to expect, but what he found made him gasp in surprise. The light from the torch was just bright enough for him to see a large round rock in what seemed to be the middle of the room, while large shelves were carved into the stone walls surrounding it. “This is a tomb,” he said to the Master in surprise. “Whose tomb is this?” “This is the tomb of every Master who has served here since the temple began,” he answered in his quiet voice. “Over a thousand years are buried in this room.” Iker stared with wide eyes at the walls, realizing that each shelf contained the corpse of a dead priest from long ago. “Come here,” he heard the Master’s voice from behind him and he managed to turn and follow it. The Master stopped in front of one of the tombs and held the light over it, Iker was relieved when he saw it was empty. “I want you to remember where this is,” the Master told him. “When the time comes, you will need to bring me down here, to be placed among my predecessors.” Iker’s relief vanished and was replaced with dread. “When the time comes? What do you mean by that? Are you going to die?!?” He asked him in disbelief. “Well, I am very old…” the Master answered with some amusement in his voice. “It’s a feeling that I have, Boy. It is coming soon.” “But, you haven’t taught me anything yet!” Iker’s anger was back. “You haven’t wanted to learn anything,” the Master retorted back in the same amused tone. “What am I supposed to do?” Iker asked again. “I suggest you learn as much as you can while there is still time.” “How much time do I have?” “Does anyone know when they are going to die? A day, a week, a month, a few months, how am I to know?” The Master raised an eyebrow in the dark. “I don’t know why you are the one worrying about it, I am the one dying.” Iker swallowed and felt the guilt build in his stomach. “I’m sorry, Master, that was very selfish of me.” “Bah,” the Master waved a hand and began to make his way back to the entrance, “It’s good to be selfish every one and awhile. It’s not all your fault either; I’ve been a stubborn old coot all these years. I guess it’s too late to change now, aye?” He chuckled a little bit. Iker followed the Master blindly as they made their way back out into the tunnel. He vaguely noticed out of the corner of his eye that the smooth round stone in the middle of the room also had something carved into it but he was too distracted to pay it too much attention. Even the dragon carvings that had his full attention not ten minutes before could keep him from thinking about the Master’s impending death. They climbed back out the tunnel and replaced the floor stones and sacking, Iker had a million things he wanted to ask the Master, but none of them seemed right. Just as he was about to open his mouth he heard someone call from the hallway.
“Helllooo? Is there anyone here? Master Ehren? Iker?”
“That will be the delivery boy,” the Master said in his usual quiet voice. “He must have come inside when no one met him at the door, come on, let us go assure him that we are all right.” Iker nodded and swallowed what he was about to say, he just hoped he could build up the courage to ask it again before the time came.
The delivery boy, Ret, was relieved when Iker and the Master came out into the hallway to meet him. “There you are,” he said with his customary grin. “When no one answered the door I thought maybe something had happened.”
“No, no,” replied the Master. “We just got caught up in something. Iker, go help him with the supplies, if you please.” Iker nodded and without saying anything walked passed them to go outside.
“What’s up with him?” Ret asked the Master. He just shrugged and motioned for Ret to go before him and they followed Iker.

Re: Mashara's Fanfics
The Master does die pretty soon, that is what he is hinting at in the chapter, but he does kinda troll Iker in a way... he makes him and Ret bury him anyway :P
